Tomatoes, cucmbers, growing, oh my!

Hello everyone! Its been a while. Lots of rain and sun helping the plants grow. I have just 2 pictures to share. One of which is the tomato plant my sister gave me. This thing is growing like crazy! The plant is about 4 feet tall now! Has some flowers on it but they haven't bloomed yet. Hoping they will start to flower soon!

The other picture is of the cucumber plant. I got its "ladder" over the weekend with the assistance of my mom because I have no idea what I needed. Anyway, with 2 stakes in place and having some yarn weaving back and forth, its ready for its vines to start climbing. When this picture was taken (Sunday), it had 2 vines. Now 2 more are slowly starting to uncoil and are getting ready to start the climb.

I am getting very excited that everything is growing so well, with the exception of the habanero plant that I replanted to another part of the garden so it could get more sun. I just cant wait for everything to start flowering so I can get some food! :) Its a good feeling when you hear your son ask to eat some lettuce from the garden.

If anyone has any gardening tips they would like to share feel free to post them in comments. I am learning this as I go, trial and error. I am sure other gardeners would love to hear ideas as well that have worked for others in the past.

Happy gardening everyone!!!

Cool gardening idea

So I am sure many of you follow random facebook or twitter pages. Some you may actually follow, a band, a celeb, recipes, the list is endless. Some you may have clicked "like" or "follow" at one point and just never decided to unfollow or unlike the page. isave is one of those pages that I liked but never really followed it.

Anyway, its a webpage as well and they posted this neat idea for gardening. Its a raised garden bed out of cinder blocks. Not sure how to measure the size you want? Just pick up some cinder blocks and block them. You can use the open spaces from the blocks for flowers and the inside the "open space" for your gardening of your veggies. Check out the link below and their article on the gardening and a picture I took from their site to show the raised garden bed. Happy gardening :)

Gardening is fun!

I started gardening a few years ago. My parents and my sister/brother-in-law have these decent size gardens at their homes. Me? I live in a townhouse with a small patio. The backyard is community shared so I couldn't  venture into that area to grow veggies. I started off with 3 window boxes and some bagged soil. I had 3 tomatoes, some green/red peppers, and jalapenos. I also had a pot that had basil and parsley in it. It wasn't too bad. Just remember to water it and watch it grow. I didn't get much fruit out of them. Just enough to make some homemade salsa. It was a fun experience all the same.

My 4yr old loved checking out my parents garden when we would visit them. He loved to pick the green beans, check out the tomatoes, the lettuce, basically everything they grew. Over the long winter months, I decided to step it up a notch and have a box garden. I did a lot of planning, lots of measuring, and finally came up with a suitable size for the patio. I even went to the point of mapping out the box on paper and label what I was going to plant, how many, etc. I was so excited to have my own box garden.

My parents, love them dearly, made the box for me and got the lovely rich soil (the good stuff, not the bagged soil). We got everything set up, got the veggies, planted them and away we go. This was in April. It is now almost the end of May and my tomatoes are growing like crazy, 14 green beans have sprouted above the soil, I have flower buds showing on the habanero (which I hear is great  to have near lettuce to keep the bunnies away). The banana peppers and green/red/orange pepper plants are growing. I have romaine growing strong and have already picked my baby spinach 3 times (yes 3 times and its not even June!). I planted more green beans today to keep up with the growth. My son gets so excited to check out the garden out back. He loves seeing everything grow. He is even eating the spinach plain like a snack. No salad dressing or "ew" noises coming from him.

This is my first blog ever but I hope to keep posting from time to time showing how the garden is progressing. I am not saying I am an expert at gardening but maybe someone who is not so much a green thumb (like how I am) sees the blog and how easy it can be, will decide to take that leap and grow a garden themselves.

I have added a few photos below. One is of the garden. The other was my first pick of the spinach on
May 19.

Until next time everyone!
